The material an All on 4 prosthesis is made out of is a very important factor to keep in mind. Prosthetic material will vary depending on the timeline of treatment and the treating doctor. A majority of doctors will advise a temporary acrylic prosthesis for a limited amount of time. From there, three options will be given to the patient for a final prosthesis. A final acrylic, a hybrid titanium acrylic prosthesis, or zirconia prosthesis can be chosen. Deciding what factors are important to you will aid in making your prosthetic material option choice.
Acrylic Temporary All on 4
An acrylic prosthesis is always given as a temporary prosthesis immediately after your implants are placed and depending on the doctor may be given as a final option. A final acrylic prosthesis will be made out of the same material as the temporary. Although this option is cheaper, it has more cons than any other option. Decreased longevity, increased gaps, and increased breakage of teeth or the entire prosthesis are all a possibility because it is made out of acrylic (plastic). The acrylic prosthesis requires more maintenance and more cleaning due to the bacterial build-up that is common on this material. However, this plastic material is more financially affordable but is not durable nor long-lasting.
Hybrid Titanium Acrylic All on 4
A final prosthesis that has a metal bar with acrylic baked on top is called a titanium bar. The added titanium bar makes it more durable than a traditional acrylic prosthesis. Additionally, a titanium bar prosthesis is cheaper than a zirconia prosthesis. However, since the prosthesis is made out of acrylic it can stain and the teeth can wear down. The lifespan of a titanium bar prosthesis is 5-7 years before the teeth need to be taken off the titanium and redone. This occurs because the teeth are made of plastic and wear down over time.
Zirconia All on 4
A final Zirconia prosthesis is the highest quality prosthetic material out on the dental market. This prosthetic material is non-staining, nearly impossible to break, form-fitting, and bacteria resistant. Having a zirconia prosthesis will also help to limit the amount of in-office maintenance due. All of these factors make this prosthesis material option the best choice. However, the one caveat to this prosthesis is it is the most expensive out of the three options due to it being a higher quality material.
